Presentation Abstract:
"Reliability of the Integrated Power System"
Today, the smart grid is primarily a vehicle for moving electricity from generators to consumers. Tomorrow, the grid will enable two-way flows of electricity and information as new technologies make possible new forms of electricity production, delivery and use.
A smart grid includes diverse and distributed energy resources and accommodates electric vehicle charging. In short, it brings all elements of the electricity system - production, delivery and consumption - closer together to improve overall system operation for the benefit of consumers and the environment.
This presentation discusses how ISOs currently are seeking alternate technologies to provide system regulation through demand-based ancillary services via the smart grid, and how they have launched their own pilot projects along these lines.
