Presentation Abstract:

"Glendale Water and Power (GWP) Smart Grid Implementation Lessons Learned"

GWP is the first utility in the nation to sign a contract with the DOE for a smart grid stimulus grant. The project is moving ahead successfully but along the way we have learned a number of lessons that can reduce cost, risk and difficulty for those who follow us. Such as:
  • Setting up a Project Management Office (PMO)
    • Assessing organizational project management capability and maturity
    • Staffing
    • Planning
  • Using a readiness assessment to determine what needs to be done before launching the initiative.
    • OPM3
    • SEI
  • Understanding the importance of stakeholder management
  • Understanding your requirements
  • The challenge of data quality
  • Understanding the scope and complexity of the IT work
  • Vendor selection and management
  • Reporting requirements

    Speaker:

Terry McDonald, PMP, Project Manager, GWP AMI Smart Grid

Thirty-nine years of experience as a Project Manager, Executive Consultant, Corporate Executive and Naval Officer is considered by Terry to be almost enough to get him through a day of smart grid project implementation. Terry loves challenges, people, process design and technology so he finds his current engagement as Project Manager for Glendale Water and Power's smart grid project to be a never ending source of things to love. Six years ago Terry joined KEMA, a consultancy providing a broad range of services to utilities worldwide. He and his colleagues at other utilities compare notes in order to capture and apply lessons learned in the rapidly evolving field of smart grid implementation.
