Presentation Abstract:

"Bringing Smart Grid Cyber Security into the Real World"

Smart grid cyber security standards development is proceeding at an accelerated pace, but is presently being outpaced by current and planned implementations for advanced metering infrastructure and other smart grid initiatives. Securing the new smarter grid has been cited as a priority by the Department of Energy, but with little indication of what that really means. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has been given the task by DOE and FERC of generating new smart grid standards for security and interoperability, but the question of who enforces those standards is still being debated.

How can utilities plan for security without knowing what they're being asked to secure? How do you design and implement new infrastructure to comply with security standards that don't exist yet? By exploring key standards development efforts from an operational frame of mind, this presentation will help answer those questions and others such as; what requirements are being developed for smart grid cyber security, when will those requirements become mandatory, and what can be done now to offset the cost and effort of meeting future cyber security requirements?
    Speaker:

Jon Stitzel, Senior Security Consultant, Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company, Inc.

Mr. Stitzel has 22 years of experience in the information technology industry, which includes over 12 years in the information security field. He has experience as an information security administrator, manager, and consultant in the manufacturing, financial, and telecommunications industries, as well as the US Government. He has overseen the deployment and administration of numerous network, system, and information security implementations and programs in both an operational and regulatory compliance capacity. Currently, Mr. Stitzel works with electric utilities to secure their infrastructures, meet NERC CIP compliance requirements, and plan security for their smart grid deployments. Mr. Stitzel is an active participant in the Smart Grid Cyber Security standards development efforts of both the National Institute of Standards & Technology, and the UCA International Open Smart Grid users group. He is also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional.
